“Heroin: The Hardest Hit”

It was an honor to work on the script for this documentary, produced in a partnership between Virginia State University and the Office of the Attorney General of Virginia.

It was a tough one to get through, with so many sad stories of lives lost too young. But with heroin deaths reaching crisis levels in Virginia, they are stories that need to be told.

I Won an Emmy!

The work I’ve been doing with Virginia State University has led me to something I never in a million years expected to see: an Emmy award!

The Capital and Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences represents Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia. On June 15, at their 55th Emmy Awards in Baltimore, VSU had several projects among the nominees. In the category of “Education/Schools – Program/Special,” I was nominated along with Jesse Vaughan and Bryce Spivey for our work on VSU Today. And we won (see p. 11)!

The whole thing is completely surreal, and I still haven’t gotten my hands on the statue … but what a cool thing to add to my resume.

2014 UPDATE: Since this post, I earned a second Emmy for my work on VSU Today. Both are proudly displayed on my mantel, amid all the thrift-shop finds and family photos. Unreal!

More Work with Virginia State University

I’ve been happy to collaborate with VSU on more television projects, including these three stories for “VSU Today”:

Find out how a group of retired alumni turned their annual dinner into a major funding source:

See how business leaders are helping students learn the things that don’t come in books:

And see the beautiful historic homes that make Petersburg so special:
