“Science Matters” at WCVE

I was raised on PBS, and to this day I enjoy Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers with my son. So I was delighted to take on our local PBS station, WCVE, as a client last year.sciencematters_cis_logo_color_1

Most of the content I have been writing there is for their “Science Matters” feature, which lets me learn about all kinds of things: physics, drones, space travel, and the up-and-coming jobs in STEM fields.

Here are a few of the pieces I’ve written for them:

Hot Shots & Hot Jobs: Making Our Daily Vitamins Effective—And Tasty!
The Science of Brewing Beer
Problem-Based Learning That Feels More Like Play

Right now, we are working on some great content to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. Stay tuned!

Making Rounds, Winter 2019

I love writing for my old friends at Cape Fear Valley. I served as editor of their quarterly full-color magazine when I worked there from 2003 to 2006, and I’m happy to contribute to it still.

Here are a couple of pieces I did for their Winter 2019 issue:

New Client! WCVE, Richmond’s Community Idea Station

I have been a fan of PBS since I was in Sesame Street’s target demographic, and wherever I go, my car radio always finds the nearest NPR station.

So when the opportunity arose to write for WCVE, I was all over it. After our first meeting, I even got a tour of the TV and radio sides of the station. So cool!

You can read the first piece we worked on together, Bioscience and Drug Discovery with “Organs on a Bench,” on the WCVE website. It is part of their “Hot Jobs” series, meant to pique the interest of Virginia students who may be pondering a career in science.

I’m looking forward to doing more with them soon!

LED Catheter Piece for Stony Brook University

Most of my writing background is in healthcare and higher ed, so writing for a university health system is a perfect combination of the two. This piece was about the high-tech invention of a nursing student (who came to that after a career in engineering) and the various players who helped bring it from concept to prototype.

Check out “Many Hands Make Light Work” to see what I mean.

Stony Brook School of Nursing

This client is always such a pleasure to work with! This was my second year helping with their annual report. I get to read about all the incredible things new nurses are learning and achieving, while polishing up the edges so it reads in a clear, consistent voice.

Strawberry Farming at VSU

I love working on these little videos for Virginia State University. I had no idea what fascinating things were happening right down the road from me until I started working with them!

Here’s a little story about how their College of Agriculture is helping small farmers to cash in on the growing demand for locally sourced berries.
